V&A Carpets have been fantastic from start to finish, from choosing carpets to fitting. We had a large renovation project and we had to move fitting dates several times and added carpets to our order, and generally moved things around, Alex and Vicky were great about all this and really helpful and unflappable with all my last minute changes and our house now looks stunning definitely 5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I have had 3 carpet quotes recently and none compared to V & A Carpets. Their knowledge, sound advice and professionalism shone through. They arrived on time with a wide range of samples including underlay. They advised on a type of carpet to have by my front door to further protect my carpet. The carpet samples themselves were of a higher quality than the other 2 companies. 5 star service.

We had our entire house carpeted by V&A Carpets as well as Luxury Vinyl Tiles for our hallway and kitchen/Utility. The quality of the carper and LVT is absolutely fantastic. With the kids running round all the time we are really happy with the investment. We returned to V&A for our front door and rear Mats which were fantastic also. Would definitely recommend V@A, a great local business.

Alex has been excellent in providing advice on the right flooring and then helping me find matches to bring ideas to life in his extensive showroom. Personable and helpful, he’s been very helpful with securing stock and working dates around my completion date to get everything sorted pre Christmas. In a challenging time for all, this has been one of my easiest tasks for my new house. Very grateful. Would recommend as far better than chain stores who’ve no interest in the more personal elements of what you need.

Hard-wearing carpets

When it comes to choosing a new carpet for your home or office, it’s important to consider factors such as style, colour, and texture. But one often-overlooked feature that should be at the top of your list is durability. Hardwearing carpets are designed to withstand heavy traffic, spills, and stains, making them an excellent choice for high-traffic areas and busy households.

So what makes a carpet “hard-wearing”? There are a few key factors to consider:

  1. Fibres: The type of fibre used in a carpet can make a big difference in its durability. Synthetic fibres like nylon, polyester, and olefin are generally more hardwearing than natural fibres like wool. Nylon is one of the most popular options for hardwearing carpets, as it is resistant to stains and wear.

  2. Pile height: A low pile height, or the height of the carpet fibres, can help make a carpet more hardwearing. This is because shorter fibres are less likely to mat down and show wear and tear over time.

  3. Density: The density of a carpet refers to how closely the fibres are woven together. A more dense carpet will be more hardwearing, as the fibres will be less likely to loosen or wear down over time.

  4. Stain resistance: Many hardwearing carpets are treated with a stain-resistant coating, which helps to repel spills and stains. This can be especially important in areas like the living room, where food and drink spills are common.

Some examples of hardwearing carpets include:

  • Berber carpets: These carpets feature a looped pile and are known for their durability and resistance to wear and tear. They are often made from wool or nylon fibres.

  • Cut pile carpets: Cut pile carpets have a more plush, soft feel, but can still be hardwearing if they are made from a durable fibre like nylon.

  • Commercial carpets: These carpets are designed specifically for use in high-traffic commercial settings, so they are typically very hardwearing and resistant to stains and wear.

When choosing a hardwearing carpet, it’s important to consider your specific needs and lifestyle. Do you have pets or young children? Do you entertain frequently? These factors can help you determine which type of hardwearing carpet will be the best fit for your home. And once you’ve chosen a carpet, be sure to follow proper care and maintenance guidelines to ensure that it lasts for many years to come.

How long does it take to order Wool carpets?

Most carpets are 7-10 days aways form ordering in normal conditions. Some suppliers can deliver within 2 days of ordering and others can take 7-10 days to be delivered. Once ordered we can book in a fitting date which is normally 2 weeks away. Please note that this is based on normal trading times and conditions. COVID19 has created a lot of delays and put pressure on delivery and fitting capacity. We would be able to give you a better indication of delivery and fitting when ordering.

Do we have to have it fitted?

No, you do not have to have it fitted.

We offer a collection service which means your fitter, or yourself, can come and collect the carpet once it’s been delivered from our warehouse in Trowbridge. We have a large, insulated, warehouse which allows us to keep your carpet safe and ready for collection.

We can also deliver the carpet (Locally) to your home if required. Please contact us for more information on delivery.

While we do insist that we measure the areas you wish us to fit the carpet for you, but we are happy to supply carpets based on your own measurements.

Our measuring service is free of charge to help prevent any incorrect measurements or any other issues that could prevent the fitting being completed on the set day of fitting.

General questions

What carpet is best for stairs?

When deciding on carpets for stairs, there is a lot to take into consideration.

Ideally, the best carpet for stairs would be a very dense, short pile carpet. This would allow the carpet to look better for longer on your stairs. The short, dense bristles allow then to stay upright for as long as possible to delay flattening of the carpet.

A tightly looped carpet is also very good for stairs, this is less likely to flatten and look better for longer. It isn’t advisable to choose these if you have cats in the home. Looped pile carpets tend to offer some resistant for cats which promotes clawing at the carpet.

While long piled carpets are more comfortable and luxurious underfoot they will flatten sooner than other carpets on the stairs.

This is a risk you will knowing need to decide on when deciding on the stair carpet, either comfort or durability?

Underlay also plays a very important part in looking after your stair carpet.

What carpet pile is best?

Choosing the correct pile is very important, this will depend on your requirements from the carpet.

Wool carpet tends to keep its shape for longer, with the twist pile bouncing back quickly as it’s a natural fibre.

Short pile carpet is less luxurious but looks better for longer as the shorter pile has less to flatten.

Longer pile carpets feel softer and luxurious, which allow you to feel the comfort and the pile getting between your toes. While the comfort levels can be very high, these tend to flatten quicker and less likely to retain their original shape because of the long pile.

To conclude:

Generally, the shorter and tighter pile is better as you can retain the softer feeling with a better or softer underlay while still retaining the appearance of the pile for longer.

Which carpet underlay is best?

Carpet underlay is a fundamental part of buying a new carpet. It’s important that you do some research before replacing your carpet, making sure that you choose the right carpet underlay for each room in your home.

Often when we are choosing a new carpet, we focus on buying a beautifully soft carpet that feels really luxurious and soft, only to be disappointed a couple of years later when the carpet feels really hard and flattened. While this is partly because of the type of carpet, underlay also plays a big part in the feel of your carpet. This plays an even larger part over time.

It’s definitely recommended to buy new underlay when you replace your carpet, rather than using the existing underlay. The best type of carpet underlay will provide thermal insulation, reduce noise, make the carpet feel softer underfoot and will help the carpet last longer as it acts as a shock absorber.

In short, we highly recommend the new blown rubber underlay. It’s recycled, recyclable and has great heat retention. It keeps its original shape for longer whereas PU (foam) underlays tend to flatten over time.

When choosing a PU underlay its very important to select one that is very dense and doesn’t give way very easily. While this will portray the effect of being softer now, it will give way very quickly and won’t look after your carpet as well in the years to come.

What carpets are easy to clean?

Man-made carpets are essentially made to be softer than the traditional wool carpets as well as being easier to clean for today’s modern and busy households.

Carpets that are made out of polypropylene, can easily be cleaned by using a 20% bleach solution on any marks or stains. This makes polypropylene carpets the easiest carpets to clean, as with the bleach solution you can get almost all if not all stains out if treated properly and quickly.

Polymide mix carpets make for amazingly soft and luxurious carpets and make them easy to clean and maintain. sadly they don’t retain their shape over time and use due to their soft nature. Unfortunately, these can not be clean with a bleach solution.

Wool carpets have been dyed and lose their colouring when cleaned profusely. Wool carpets can be cleaned, but not by using chemicals. While wool is harder to clean when having big spills, it is however a natural product that sheds over time. Thus, you might find when staining or marking your wool carpet, they lighten or even disappear over time as the pile sheds (6-12months). Thus almost cleaning itself.
